Watching their developer events is a nerve racking experience! On one hand you are excited for amazing new features that can help us make our products even more powerful, but on the other hand OpenAI can release competing features that could make you redundant.

After OpenAI released GPTs, we had a number of people reach out and ask...

>"Oh no, have OpenAI just killed Chat Thing?".

Well thankfully the dust has settled now, and after having some time to really dig into GPTs and their capabilities we were relieved to realise for most professional use cases there are still plenty of reason to use a service like Chat Thing over GPTs.

## OpenAI GPTs compared to Chat Thing

At first glance it might seem like OpenAI GPTs and Chat Thing provide very similar functionality, and while GPTs do a great job of making custom AI chat bots more accessible to everyone, in a lot of areas they are severely lacking features hampering their overall usefulness.

In most cases, if you want to integrate AI chat bots into your business you are still probably better off using a service like Chat Thing. Of course we would say that, but we will let you make up your own mind after reading the points below.

### Data Sources

OpenAI GPTs allow you to add "knowledge" to your bot by uploading up to 10 files. There are also size limits on these files, and you get charged $0.20 per day per gigabyte per bot! This is a great way of adding data to basic bots, but the limitations make it very impractical for anything more complicated.

![Chat Thing's data sources](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1701161616/datasources_5a20d55635.png)

Chat Thing's data sources are leaps and bounds ahead of GPTs knowledge files in many ways:

- Automatically connect to 8+ different types of data source, not just files
- Automatically refresh data source content to keep it up to date
- No limits on the number of documents in a data source
- Advanced functionality such as web crawling

### Bots you can use anywhere

When you create a GPT its forever imprisoned within the ChatGPT interface. That might be a bit dramatic, but it does make GPTs a lot less useful. Not only that but you can only use GPTs if you are a $20 a month ChatGPT plus subscriber, so this hugely limits who can use your bot if you share it publicly.

With Chat Thing if you share your bot via a URL anyone can use it regardless of whether they are a ChatGPT or Chat Thing subscriber. In addition to that, you can integrate your bot over many different channels such as Slack, Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp all in a few clicks. That's not possible with GPTs at the moment.

With Chat Thing you can even add an customisable embeddable widget to your site meaning you can use Chat Thing as a support agent helping to answer customer queries.

![Chat Thing embeddable widget](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1701164565/widget_fc9f4e0af7.png)

In summary here's the way Chat Thing makes your bots more shareable:

- 6+ channels, interact with your bot via the web, Slack, Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp and API.
- Shareable bot URLs that are useable by everyone, not just ChatGPT subscribers
- Embeddable and customisable chat widgets
- Password protect bots

### Stopping hallucinations

One of the biggest issues with large language models such as GPT is their tendency to hallucinate and make up responses and data. This can be very detrimental to the usefulness of AI bots as depending on your use case the accuracy of responses might be very important. You don't want your support bot making things up when a customer has a problem, that will only anger them more!

With OpenAI GPTs, the only way to fight against hallucinations is via prompt engineering. You can write something along the lines of "Only answer questions using the content in the provided documents. If the answer isn't there say 'I do not know'". This technique works some of the time, but especially as the chat history gets longer the bots tend to stop paying as much attention to the prompt and can still hallucinate.

In Chat Thing you can use prompt engineering to prevent against hallucinations just like you can with GPTs, but we have also gone further and developed something we call response guards. Response guards basically get the bot to double check its responses before errors before sending them back to the user. This massively improves the reliability of the bot in giving back accurate information.

![A screen shot of the response guard interface](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1701343041/response_guard_79b34ad6cd.png)

### Conversation Logs

With OpenAI GPTs you have no way of seeing the conversations users have with your bot. Whilst this is good for privacy, it does limit GPTs for certain use cases. If you want to use them for customer support, lead generation, or many other uses having visibility of conversations will be essential.

Chat Thing provides you with full searchable conversation history so you can see how users are interacting with your bot. In addition to that user's can mark responses as positive or negative so you can see where your bot is lacking and make improvements in your data sources, or prompts etc.

Not only that, but you can export all your bot's conversations as a CSV if you need to work with the data in other tools, and we are working more advanced features, such as bot usage statistics and graphs. None of which is available in GPTs.

![A screen shot of the Chat Thing conversations interface](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1701344217/conversations_efd64fa3ff.png)

![A screenshot of the new bot statistics screen](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1701344561/bot_statistics_7896dc59d4.png)

### Personal Support

Although getting started with creating an AI bot using GPTs or Chat Thing is quick and easy, tuning them to work exaclty how you want can be quite an art. There are many settings to tweak. Should I set a custom prompt? How do I change the tone? How do I stop hallucinations? Whats the best way to stop hallucinations. The list goes on!

With OpenAI GPTs you are completely on your own trying to figure out these issues, but with Chat Thing we have dedicated support with knowledge of helping people make thousands of bots ready to help whenever you need it.

Don't just take our word for it, we get messages like the one below in our Discord community all the time.

[![A message praising Chat Thing and our amazing support in Discord](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1701345105/discord_feedback_bcea77274b.png)](https://discord.com/channels/1083665149627469834/1083665149627469837/1173961315551821845)

We have 850 members in [our Discord](https://discord.com/invite/DGCCR34Fsj) where you can get supports, or if email is more your style you can always email us there too and we will be happy to help. You won't get this kind of service setting up your GPTs from OpenAI.

### Adaptability and new features

At Chat Thing we have the advantage of being a small nimble team that can adapt to customer requests and ideas at the click of your fingers. We have sooooo much in the pipeline we are really exited about, and we believe we can innovate at a faster pace than larger companies.

We are on the cusp of releasing a new and improved bot dashboard, and then shortly after that we will be releasing the first version of functions giving your bots powers they have never had before.

Our long term vision for Chat Thing is to build a product that provides users with the easiest and most powerful way to integrate AI assistants into your websites and products. Chat Thing, should not only be a support tool, but a pro-active co-pilot that can not only guide users but take actions on their behalf!

### Summary

In summary we are really pleased about the additional exposure OpenAI GPTs will provide to the bots industry. They are awesome for quickly dipping your toes in the world of AI bots, but for more professional use cases you will still need to reach for a service with more advanced features such as Chat Thing.
","OpenAI have been shipping new features like maniacs which is both a good and bad if you are running a startup built on top of their APIs. Capture is live: meet your visitors before the first message","Every chat on your website starts the same way.

A stranger arrives. They ask their question. Your agent answers. They leave.

You never find out who they were. They might have been your ideal customer. They might have been ready to buy. You will never know, because nothing asked.

That changes today.

![The visitor-facing pre-chat form rendered on a bot page, with intro copy above the fields](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1777051094/docs/prechat-form-visitor.png)

### Meet your visitors before the first message

Lead Capture shows a short form to visitors before the chat opens. They fill in their name and email, or whatever your team actually needs to know, and then the conversation starts.

By the time they send their first message, you already know who they are.

{% youtube id="ygNJiEvskZ4" /%}

### Your team knows who called

Every form submission is saved to the conversation. Open any chat in Chat Thing and the visitor's details are right there at the top, before the first message.

If you want those details in your CRM, your inbox, or your team's Slack channel, you can connect that too. It is optional, but it means your team can follow up the next morning knowing exactly who they spoke to, what they asked, and what they came in for.

### Ask for what you actually need

The default form asks for a name and an email. That is usually enough.

But if your team needs more, the company, the product they are asking about, a callback date, you can add those fields too. Drag to reorder. Mark the ones that matter as required.

There is also a short intro message you can put above the form. Use it to explain what the chat is for, set the right expectation, or just make people feel welcome before they fill anything in.

![The "Require a pre-chat form" toggle and intro copy field in the web channel settings](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1777051081/docs/prechat-form-toggle.png)

### Why asking up front works

Most teams try to capture emails at the end of a chat. A popup. A nudge. A "before you go" moment.

The conversion on those is brutal. The visitor got their answer and they are already on their way out.

Asking at the start works because the visitor is already here. They came to get help. Filling in a short form is not friction, it is an introduction. And when they do it, the whole conversation that follows is warmer, more personal, and easier to follow up on.

### Where this makes the biggest difference

If you sell anything with a sales process, demos, pricing questions, onboarding, Lead Capture means your team goes into every follow-up with context instead of a cold email address.

If you run a B2B site, knowing the company before the chat starts is the difference between a useful conversation and a polite one.

If you do lead generation, this replaces the popup form entirely. Same details. Better experience. And the visitor gets their questions answered on the way in.

### The honest caveat

Lead Capture is on the web channel for now. It does not work on WhatsApp, Slack, or Discord, those channels do not have a natural place for a form before the conversation starts. We will think about how this could work on other channels in the future.

### Privacy, kept simple

Visitors see the form before they share anything. Required fields are marked. The intro copy is yours to write, including any consent line your jurisdiction needs. Their details stay in your Chat Thing account and only go to the tools you choose to connect.

### Getting started

Live today on Pro and Business plans.

Go to your agent, open Channels, find the web channel settings, and turn on "Require a pre-chat form." Pick your fields. Save. The next visitor who opens your chat will see it.","Lead Capture is a native pre-chat form on the web channel. V2: Mentions, DMs, and Slash Commands","Discord users, this one is for you.

{% youtube id="gyTe7D1Ur0A" /%}

We've rebuilt our Discord integration from the ground up. The result is an agent that feels like it actually belongs in Discord, rather than one that was stitched on as an afterthought.

## What changed and why

The original Discord integration (v1) was built around a single slash command. Simple, focused, and it works well for servers that want exactly that: one clean command, minimal permissions, maximum predictability.

But a lot of you wanted more. You wanted your agent in the flow of conversation, not off to the side waiting to be formally invoked. So we built v2.

## What's new in v2

### Respond to @mentions

Your agent now responds when someone mentions it directly in a channel. A team member can type `@YourAgent what's the returns policy?` mid-conversation and get an answer right there, without switching context or typing a slash command.

### Direct messages

Users can now DM your agent privately. Useful for sensitive questions, personal account lookups, or extended back-and-forth that would clutter a public channel.

### Slash commands

Slash commands are still here, now with Discord's native autocomplete. Type `/ask` (or whatever you configure) and Discord surfaces it instantly.

### Threaded conversations

V2 keeps conversations organised in threads, so channels stay clean even when your agent is active across multiple conversations at once.

## V1 or V2: which is right for you?

Both versions are available.

V2 is the better fit for most teams. It brings your agent into the natural flow of conversation, supports multiple interaction types, and uses Discord's full feature set.

V1 is a good fit if your server is privacy-sensitive and you'd prefer the smallest possible permission footprint, or if a single slash command is genuinely all you need.

## Setting it up

Switching to V2 takes three steps:

1. **Switch to V2** in your Discord channel settings inside Chat Thing
2. **Enable Message Content Intent** in your Discord agent settings (this allows the agent to read messages it's mentioned in)
3. **Update the interaction endpoint URL** in your Discord agent settings

New to Discord? Our setup guide walks you through connecting to a server.

---

**Discord V2 is available now** on all plans with Discord channels.","Our Discord integration just got a major upgrade. The same complaint kept coming up in conversation after conversation: for-sale signs were being left up on houses long after the houses had sold, and customers were quietly getting fed up about it.

The recommendation the dashboard wrote back was as plain as the problem. Take the signs down sooner.

That isn't the kind of insight you find by staring at a pie chart. It's what a member of staff might pick up if they read every single chat from the past week, and even then only if they were paying close attention.

Today we're shipping the new Analytics dashboard for Chat Thing. It does the reading for you, and it tells you what to do.

{% youtube id="1NWRzG6YW5k" /%}

### What's in it

Open the Overview tab on any agent, pick a month range, and you get five sections that answer the questions you opened the dashboard to ask.

### Topic Analysis

![Topic Analysis — Top Conversation Topics ranked list and Trending Topics Over Time chart](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1773247246/docs/analytics/analytics-topics.png)

Every conversation grouped by what it was actually about. Not raw keywords, themes.

Top Conversation Topics gives you a ranked list with counts and percentages. Trending Topics Over Time is a weekly line chart that shows which subjects are climbing and which are falling.

You can manage up to ten custom topics per agent, rename them, colour-code them, or have Chat Thing generate them from your conversation data.

### Sentiment Analysis

![Sentiment Analysis — Positive / Neutral / Negative donut, trend line, and emotion-detection breakdown](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1773247248/docs/analytics/analytics-sentiment.png)

A donut chart breaks every conversation into Positive, Neutral, or Negative. A trend line shows whether your users are getting happier or more frustrated week by week.

Emotion detection goes one level deeper. How often users are Curious, Satisfied, Frustrated, Confused, and the rest, with percentages for each.

### Engagement Insights

![Engagement Insights — messages per conversation, daily volume, resolution rate, and duration with trend chart](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1773247249/docs/analytics/analytics-engagement.png)

The conversation quality metrics most teams want, in one place.

Average messages per conversation. Average daily chat volume. Resolution rate. Average conversation duration. The trend chart plots messages-per-conversation against resolution rate, so you can tell whether longer chats are actually helping anyone.

### Common Questions

![Common Questions — top ten clustered questions with topic tags and ask-counts](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1773247251/docs/analytics/analytics-questions.png)

An AI clusters every question your users asked into the top ten things they actually wanted to know.

Each cluster has a topic tag, an ask-count, and an expandable view of the individual conversations behind it. This is where you find the article you should write next, the FAQ entry that's missing, the prompt instruction your agent needs.

### Actionable Recommendations

![Actionable Recommendations — ranked suggestions with type, priority, impact, and action steps](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1773247253/docs/analytics/analytics-recommendations.png)

The dashboard generates specific suggestions ranked by priority. High, Medium, Low, Info.

Each recommendation has a type (Prompt Update, Knowledge Gap, Business Insight, Feature Suggestion, or Success), a description, an impact statement, action steps, and the count of conversations it affects. Some are about your agent. Others are about your business.

The for-sale-sign story came out of this section. The dashboard noticed the same complaint surfacing across many separate conversations, classified it as a Business Insight, and wrote a one-line action: take the signs down sooner, your customers are noticing.

### It catches what you would miss

This is the bit we keep coming back to. The dashboard isn't only summarising agent performance. It's listening to what your customers are saying about the business behind the agent, and giving you a quiet nudge when something's off.

A delivery window that's frustrating people. A returns step that nobody can find. A booking flow that loses customers halfway through. A sign that's been up too long.

You don't need to know the question in advance. The dashboard finds it for you.

### Weekly email digest

If you'd rather not open the dashboard at all, opt in to a weekly email with the headline metrics, sentiment overview, top questions, AI insights, and links straight back into the dashboard. Configurable per user in Account settings.

### Why we built it this way

The data was always there. What was missing was someone to read it.

An LLM can read every conversation an agent had this month, cluster the themes, surface the friction, rank the priorities, and tell you what to do about it. This is due our default model (gpt-3.5-turbo-0125) pricing being massively reduced by OpenAI.

**For most plans your message tokens will have almost doubled over night!**

![Xnapper-2024-03-20-12.36.27.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1710942287/Xnapper_2024_03_20_12_36_27_ca1e47a145.png)

## Message tokens that go further

The second change we have made relates to how we calculate the tokens used while chatting to your bots.

We now count input and output tokens separately so they can be charged at different rates.

Many model providers charge different amounts for input tokens and output tokens.

Input tokens are often cheaper and include the prompt, the message, and anything else that is sent to the model when you chat with a bot. Output tokens are often more expensive and consist of the responses generated by your bots.

Previously, we treated all the tokens used by your bot the same, but now we have introduced multipliers for input and output tokens so we can adjust the number of message tokens they use to better reflect the underlying models.

In general you will use way more input tokens than output tokens, because every time you send a message the input tokens are made up from your bot prompt and entire chat history, so this new change should mean that on the whole your message tokens go further.

We have added a section to our docs explaining this change, include a table with each of the model's input and output modifier values.

![Xnapper-2024-03-20-12.37.12.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/djyjvrw5u/image/upload/v1710942287/Xnapper_2024_03_20_12_37_12_42580edec6.png)

## AI bots are becoming more affordable every day

Our biggest cancelation reason is its "too expensive" and to be honest, until recently it was hard to disagree, especially if you need the more expensive models.

Luckily over the past 6 months we have been able to reduce the cost of our models multiple times and will continue to do so whenever the underlying cost changes.

At the current rate of price reductions AI bots will soon be extremely affordable for everyone and even more use-cases!
","Underlying model prices are changing all the time (usually getting cheaper) and we are still committed to passing these savings on to you so you get the best value out of Chat Thing possible.","more-tokens-for-everyone","2024-03-20T13:35:57.646Z","2024-03-20T14:26:57.975Z","2024-03-20T13:47:42.984Z","sphnm3aym2aihdt4pmrfwgn9"]
